# How to update server artifacts?

> Replace your FXServer build with a newer artifact on Windows or Linux.

Artifacts are the FXServer build your server runs on. Escrow-protected scripts need a recent build, so old artifacts are a common cause of errors (see [Common Errors](https://docs.aps-store.com/helpful/common-errors.md)).

Type `version` in the server console to see the build you run now.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Use the **LATEST RECOMMENDED** build. Newer builds are created by the community and can be faulty.

**1. Stop the server**

Stop your server and make a backup of your artifacts folder (the folder with `FXServer.exe` on Windows, or `run.sh` on Linux).

**2. Download the new build**

Open the artifacts page for your system and click the **LATEST RECOMMENDED** button:

* [Windows artifacts](https://runtime.fivem.net/artifacts/fivem/build_server_windows/master/): downloads `server.7z`
* [Linux artifacts](https://runtime.fivem.net/artifacts/fivem/build_proot_linux/master/): downloads `fx.tar.xz`

**3. Replace the old files**

**Windows:** extract `server.7z` into your artifacts folder and overwrite the existing files.

**Linux:** copy `fx.tar.xz` into your artifacts folder and extract it there:

```bash theme={null}
tar xf fx.tar.xz
```

Only replace the artifacts folder. Your `server-data` folder (resources and `server.cfg`) stays as it is.

**4. Start the server**

Start the server the same way as before and type `version` in the console to check the new build number.
